The Pull – 10-30-13

Posted in Comics | Leave a comment

DAMIAN_SOBM_Cv1_76i4p51ih6_Here is my pull list for this week:

Damian Son of Batman #1

Swamp Thing Annual #2

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7

Saga #15

Avengers #22

Avengers A.I. #5

Guardians of the Galaxy #8

Infinity #5

Superior Spider-Man #20

Superior Spider-Man Team-Up Special #1

X-Men Battle of the Atom #2

Well, this is it, the end of Battle of the Atom is within spitting distance. I can’t wait to see how this epic ends. It has all been one hell of a ride and the end is sure to make waves. With the way that Age of Ultron ended, I am super interested to see if the end f this event is nothing more than a cheap cash-in for new books to come.

Speaking of events, Infinity is back again with the Avengers and Infinity proper. What a great series this has been, huh?

Guardians of the Galaxy is back again with an Infinity tie-in that leaves me more puzzled than anything else. This book’s publishing schedule is odd to say the least.

What are you going to be reading this week? Let me know!

Comic Reviews – 10-23-13

300px-Wolverine_and_the_X-Men_Vol_1_37This week’s reviews rundown:

Injustice Gods Among Us #10 – 8.4

Larfleeze #4 – 7.9

Satellite Sam #4 – 7.0

Sex Criminals #2 – 9.0

Daredevil #32 – 10.0

Savage Wolverine #10 – 8.8

Superior Carnage #4 Didn’t pick this one up

Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #5 – 7.9

Wolverine and the X-Men #37 – 8.4

Lots of great books this week. Can you guess what my comic of the week is? Yep, it’s Daredevil #32. This book was amazing, fantastic, and quite the masterpiece on many different levels. From the art to the dialogue, this comic was just right. This is a team of creators that need to be together no matter what. To move them away from each other would be a sin. And with issue #36 ostensibly being the end of this iteration of the series, I may be one sad, sad man. I hope the team stays put. Also, I think I’ve said this before, if you haven’t been reading this series, stop what you’re doing, buy a subscription to Marvel Unlimited, download the app on your iPad, and start from the beginning. This is super hero comics at its best.

Moving on, what writer is hotter than Matt Fraction? With three of his books coming out in two weeks, if you are a fan of his work, you are in good shape. Satellite Sam, while not as great as it was when it first started, continues to be a compelling adult story while Sex Criminals is hot on many levels. Read these now while you can.

Now for the speed round: Wolverine and the X-Men was great as Bendis’ classic event is proving to be one of the best of the year; Superior Team-Up is a good partner to the core series, but not quite up to snuff when compared to Slott’s series; Savage Wolverine is beautiful; Injustice continues to be a sleeper hit; Larfleeze is funny as ever but derivative at times; Superior Carnage is a steaming pile of crap that doesn’t deserve to be purchased for $3.99.

That’s all I got, what did you read this week?

Sex Criminals #2 Review

Posted in Comics | Leave a comment

sexcrim2-cov-1Sex Criminals #2 is a great book and a fun read built upon a premise that’s both wacky and intriguing. You see, our two protagonists, Jon and Suzie, have the amazing ability to stop time..but only when they orgasm. And what does this mean? Well, it means have sex and begin to rob the hell out of stores and banks.

Where last issue was a sort of origin story for Suzie, this issue serves the same purpose but for Jon. Matt Fraction’s dialogue is just as spot on as it was last issue, maybe a little better. Fraction’s way of telling Jon’s story is brilliant and funny while Chip Zdardsy’s art fits perfectly. The fact that I am a male reading this, I may be relating more towards the main focus of this issue, Jon. Still, however, Suzie is obviously the main protagonist of the book as she is the title’s main narrator. Her story is amazing as well and seeing the couple’s interactions with each other is priceless.

In this issue, we also find out that Jon and Suzie aren’t the only one’s out there that can inhabit their time-stopped world. Little is known of these other people chasing them down at this point. It seems as though they are some sort of time stopping orgasm police. One must not have sex and use their time-stopping orgasm abilities to commit crimes apparently. Odd, but it works.

Now that we have the two main character’s beginnings explained away, it is time to get down to the nitty-gritty: what are Jon and Suzie to do after their revelation that they are not alone? Keep an eye out on this title, folks. It is a very mature yet quirky book that is begging to be read.

Score: 9.0

The Pull – 10-16-13

detailAnother week and another pull list. Comic books are great, aren’t they?

Batman Superman #4

Avengers #21

Guardians of the Galaxy #7

Hawkeye #13

Indestructible Hulk Special #1

New Avengers #11

Superior Spider-Man #19

Uncanny X-Men #13

Well, Hawkeye. Do you remember the last time you read Hawkeye proper since the epic Pizza Dog issue? Me neither. It’s been that long. Now mind you, I am not disappointed at all about this. As a matter of fact, I am more than happy to wait a bit in order to maintain a sense of artistic continuity in the series. I’d rather see David Aja on the book indefinitely than to succumb to a rapid release schedule with many artists on board. And if Aja’s catching up means that Matt Fraction has more time to make books such as Satellite Sam and Sex criminals, I am a happy camper.

On the opposite side of the release spectrum, we have Superior Spider-Man. This is just about as solid a series as Marvel has now. There is talk of the Ock-Spidey status quo going away as we draw closer to the release of the next Spider-Man movie. I hope that is not the case. Spider-Man hasn’t been so exciting in a long time, so I don’t mind Ock-Spidey hanging around for an extended period of time.

Finally, we have Batman Superman hitting the shelves again. This is a weird series for me that spans both sides of the spectrum. On the one hand, I am reading an amazing book that blows me away with both the art and the story. On the other, I am reading a book that’s dialogue is odd and the art lacks detail and background work. I just hope I see the better side of the coin this week.

So what does your pull list look like?
